Creative Time and The Blanton Collaborate
Democracy In America: The National Campaign, and News from a Mime's Thud

The public art project, “News from a Mime's Thud” developed by Rodney McMillian and Olga Koumoundorous was part of a six–city project titled Democracy in America: The National Campaign, a program investigating artists' relationship with, and reactions to the historic roots and practical manifestations of the American democratic tradition. “News from a Mime's Thud” was a mobile performance piece, which examined the complex reality of the death penalty and the punishment system currently implemented by the United States. With the help of local actors, a one–day, guerilla–style performance was held at multiple locations throughout Texas on June 5, 2008. Because of its highly publicized and controversial stance on the death penalty, Texas was an ideal destination for this work.

About the Artists and organization
Rodney McMillian was born in Columbia, South Carolina and lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. He received his M.F.A. in 2005 from the California Institute of the Arts and is primarily a multimedia artist. His work has been internationally exhibited, and in 2008 was included in the Whitney Biennial in New York.

Olga Koumoundouros was born in New York, NY and lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She graduated with a M.F.A. in 2001 from the California Institute of the Arts and works with both sculpture and installation art. Her work has been internationally exhibited, and in May 2008, was shown at Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects.
Creative Time is a public art organization based in New York City that has worked nationally since 2007. The organization works with artists who ignite the imagination and explore ideas that shape society. By initiating a dynamic conversation among artists, sites, and audiences, Creative Time produces projects that enliven pubic spaces with free and powerful expression.
