Modern and Contemporary Art of the Americas
America/Americas, featuring 130 paintings, sculptures, prints, and other works of art from 1909 to the present, explores some of the defining cultural issues that have shaped North, South, and Central America. This innovative integration of the Blanton's American and Latin American collections makes it possible to trace the shared history and cultural dialogues that unite these diverse political and geographical areas. How did growing industrialization and urbanization affect artists in the first half of the 20th century? After World War II, how did artists address the complex and often tumultuous social and political changes taking place throughout the Americas? And how did art movements, whether Social Realism or the more universal style of geometric abstraction, cross the suprisingly porous borders separating countries and continents? This broad and inclusive selection of art by familiar and lesser-known artists provides a fresh understanding of 20th-century art produced in this hemisphere and reflects upon what it means to be American in the broadest possible sense of that term.
