The European galleries in the new Blanton Museum of Art at The University of Texas at Austin introduce one of the most significant presentations of European art in this country. The inaugural installations of both European paintings and works on paper reveal the exceptional results of nearly 20 years of growth, including the Suida-Manning Collection of paintings and drawings and the Leo Steinberg Collection of prints, as well as approximately 7,000 prints from other major gifts and acquisitions. No other museum in the United States has grown so quickly in all three areas or presented works in these media in galleries specifically designed to emphasize their coordination and collective meaning.
The installations explore the continuities and relationships between these media through style, theme, and time period. The new museum's greatly expanded space will allow visitors to explore a dramatically increased number of works from the Blanton's rapidly growing collections. Conservation and cleaning of more than 50 paintings have revealed exceptional color and quality and will literally change the way the viewer will see these spectacular paintings.
