The Carl & Marilynn Thoma Collection was established in 1997, developing as one of the most prominent collections of South American Andean Colonial art in the United States. The Blanton Museum of Art first displayed paintings from the collection in 2008, as a venue for The Virgin, Saints, and Angels: South American Paintings 1600-1825 from the Thoma Collection, a traveling exhibition organized by the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University.
