Art Talk: Medieval Monsters: Far and Near

Join us for this special art talk featuring Asa Mittman, Professor and Chair of Art and Art History at California State University, Chico and Sherry Lindquist, Associate Professor of Art History at Western Illinois University, the exhibition co-curators of ’Medieval Monsters: Terrors, Aliens, Wonders.’

Medieval artists used visual cues of monstrosity to depict both foreigners and people who did not conform to restrictive social norms, and who therefore seemed alien in some way. Attitudes reflected in medieval art betray complex feelings of fear, loathing, curiosity, and desire of the other. Analysis of such imagery demonstrates long-lasting consequences for interactions between peoples and the development of racial thinking.

This event will take place in our Capitol Room, located across in the plaza from the main museum entrance in our Smith Building. Included with museum admission, free for UT students/faculty/staff. The Blanton is located at the intersection of Congress Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Paid parking is available in the Brazos Garage on Brazos Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Parking is $4; bring your ticket with you to the museum.
