Lunchtime Talk: Materiality as discourse

Join us for this special program that forms part of our ’Distinguished Speakers in the Art of the Spanish Americas’ Series. This talk will be led by Gustavo Tudisco, Curator at the Museo de Arte Hispanoamericano Isaac Fernandez Blanco – Sede Palacio Noel, Buenos Aires, Argentina, who will discuss how the private and public art collections at the Fernández Blanco Museum were created, especially those of silverwork. Not too many people have studied this material in detail despite being very popular in the colonial period and the most important reason for colonization: only Potosí, in what is today Bolivia, provided an estimated 60% of all silver mined worldwide, thus helping locate Spain at the heart of European politics in the 1600s and 1700s.
