SoundSpace Workshop: LEXICON

Join us for a special workshop hosted by Annelyse Gelman, held in conjunction with SoundSpace: word/play which takes place on Sunday, 2-4pm 2/17.

A poet’s work is entirely contained in the selection and arrangement of words. Typically the poet has a nearly-infinite pool of language to draw on (every word in the dictionary, archaic words, words in multiple languages, compound words, invented words). In this hands-on workshop, we’ll see what happens to the hallmarks of poetry—image, tone, subject, voice, music—when we restrict ourselves to a smaller lexicon, thinking and feeling with words that don’t “belong to us.” 

Everyone is welcome; no prior experience with poetry is necessary. All materials will be provided and admission is free.

This event will take place in our Capitol Room, located across the plaza in our Smith building. Paid parking is available in the Brazos Garage on Brazos Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Parking is $4; bring your ticket with you to the museum for payment and validation.

Annelyse Gelman’s work has appeared in The New Yorker, BOMB Magazine, the PEN Poetry Series, Verse Daily, and elsewhere, and she is the author of the poetry collection Everyone I Love Is a Stranger to Someone (2014). She’s currently a fellow at the Michener Center for Writers.
